Glasgow Airport set for major transformation

Glasgow Airport is poised for its most significant transformation in over a decade as part of a £350 million investment by new owner AviAlliance.
The extensive five-year redevelopment will modernise the main terminal, overhaul gate areas for the first time in 30 years, and expand airside retail and dining, with completion targeted for 2027.
The upgrade aims to dramatically enhance the passenger experience and make Glasgow more attractive to airlines, especially those that previously withdrew in favour of Edinburgh.
Chief executive Kam Jandu emphasised the airport’s ambition to restore key short-haul and long-haul routes, including services to Milan, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris, and the US East Coast, where demand for New York flights remains strong.
Improvements will also enable faster aircraft turnaround times, addressing a key requirement for low-cost carriers. Glasgow, which served 8.2 million passengers in 2024, aims to grow by 4–5% annually and reclaim its competitive edge, leveraging its spacious terminal in contrast to capacity constraints at Edinburgh.
Beyond the terminal overhaul, the investment supports upgrades to airfield infrastructure and energy efficiency initiatives, aligning with AGS’ commitment to net zero direct emissions by the mid-2030s. The project reflects wider UK and Scottish government strategies to boost regional connectivity and economic growth through infrastructure renewal.
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes hailed the investment as “a huge mark of confidence” in Scotland’s international connectivity, while AGS’ new Chair Charles Hammond called it a pivotal moment in unlocking the airport’s regional potential.
Under the £350m investment, Southampton Airport, which completed its 164-metre runway extension in 2023, will undergo redevelopment works within its terminal while Aberdeen Airport, which is Europe’s largest heliport, will see similar investment in its airfield infrastructure.
