Gorbals homes recognised as an example of Scotland’s best architecture

Laurieston DevelopmentNew Gorbals Housing Association’s newest homes in Laurieston have been named in the top 100 buildings of the century, and shortlisted for the Scotstyle architecture award.

The Scotstyle list, which features buildings from 1916 right up to the present day, has been compiled by Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) as a celebration of Scottish architecture.

The development is featured in the exhibition ‘Scotstyle – Building the Century’ as part of the Festival of Architecture 2016. Those interested in attending can do so for free every day until 30th September 2016, 10am – 5pm.

The Scottish public will have the opportunity to pick their favourite building of the century at this event, with the winner revealed at the Festival’s Finale event in Dundee on the 18th November.

During the year, the Laurieston development has been recognised with a total of 14 awards, including a Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland Awards for Architecture, a Royal Incorporation of British Architects (RIBA) award (one of only five projects in Scotland recognised), and two Saltire Society awards for the categories Multiple House Development and Landscaping in a Housing Development.

Nicola Sturgeon, MSP for Glasgow Southside, said; “As the local MSP I’m delighted to see the development at Laurieston receive these prestigious awards. New Gorbals Housing Association has a great track record for providing high quality homes for people to live in. I know my constituents in Laurieston are very pleased with their new houses and it’s great to see this recognised.”

The Association also received the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland/Scottish Government award for Client of the Year.

When presenting the award, Ian Gilzean, the Scottish Government’s Chief Architect, said; “New Gorbals has long been recognised as one of the most skilful housing association clients in Scotland. Under director, Fraser Stewart, they have commissioned a series of impressive, large-scale housing developments throughout the Gorbals. These projects integrate art, landscape, high-quality streetscapes and architecture of generous spaces and good materials, to create welcoming environments of the highest quality. Working closely with their architects, New Gorbals Housing Association has continuously achieved excellence within constrained budgets and has never accepted the argument that housing for their tenants needs be anything but very special indeed. This new development is no different.”

The Association, along with architects Elder and Cannon, Page/Park, Ian White Associates, and builder Urban Union have delivered 201 affordable rented homes in a layout of streets and mews settings building on the urban character of Glasgow, comprising clearly-defined blocks to reinforce the grid of the city. The development follows contemporary tenement form, with a variety of housing types – apartments, maisonettes and terraces.
