Government releases £1.7m town centre regeneration funding

Projects aimed at revitalising Kilsyth main street, converting a derelict warehouse into a community facility in Helensburgh and renovating the Ayr Gaiety theatre are among those to benefit from a £1.7 million fund from the Scottish Government.

Social justice secretary Alex Neil announced that offers have gone out to 21 town centre groups for the Town Centre Communities Capital Fund (TCCCF) which will help communities deliver capital projects.

Today Mr Neil will visit CVS Inverclyde which will receive £60,000 to help breathe new life into Greenock’s Cathcart Street. The funding will be used to develop a Greenock Community Hub which will offer office accommodation, training spaces and information and advice services to people in the area.

Mr Neil said: “I’m delighted to be able to announce this support for community organisations across Scotland. The £1.7m fund will give enterprising communities the chance to take forward improvements to their area that complement our Town Centre Action Plan.

“By giving community organisations the opportunities to take action we can help make town centres the attractive and accessible thriving places we know they can be.

“CVS Inverclyde, a voluntary organisation forum, has received £60,000 to create a Third Sector Innovation Centre which will be a key contributor to the success of the area, its residents and visitors. I look forward to visiting the organisation while in Inverclyde tomorrow.”

CVS Inverclyde works to build the relationship between the third sector and community planning partners, support volunteering, develop the third sector and increase social enterprise. Mr Neil will visit CVS Inverclyde as part of the Greenock travelling cabinet today.
