Protium acquired the project in May 2026, specifically tailoring the hydrogen offtake strategy to maximise energy efficiency while minimising local traffic, noise, and visual impact on the surrounding landscape.

As the only hydrogen project with a contract for difference in Scotland, selected under the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1), Cromarty leverages significant Westminster financial support to directly lower energy costs for locally produced, zero-emission fuel. By producing and consuming green hydrogen within the region, the project ensures that all benefits remain directly within the Highlands.

To ensure the transition to net zero is fair, inclusive, and delivers lasting socio-economic value, Protium is committing to deliver a Community Benefits Scheme centred on four key pillars, developed through active engagement with regional stakeholders:

• Local Procurement, which partners with regional businesses across the project lifecycle.
• Community Funding, which aligns funding directly with the real socio-economic and environmental needs of the region.
• Educational Outreach, which delivers STEM workshops, site visits, and green skills development for local schools, colleges, and universities.
