Highland Council sets out major road improvements for 2026/27
Highland Council has signed off on a £21.55 million roads capital programme for 2026/27, confirming a significant investment to upgrade and maintain routes across the region.
The package includes £7.8m for base capital works, £12.15m in top‑up funding for priority schemes, £1m for emergencies, and £600,000 for small‑span structures. Area allocations—currently estimated at £19.037m—will be finalised once new condition survey data is available.
Cllr Ken Gowans said the funding will “make a real difference to communities across the Highlands,” praising local teams for their work.
A rolling programme of works, based on an estimated £3.19m allocation, has been approved, covering surface dressing and resurfacing across the A851, A855, and several B, C and U‑class roads. Members also backed steps to secure an extra £200,000 for a Portree improvement project through a mix of regeneration funding and car‑parking income.
Active travel projects are also progressing, including:
- Opening up the Moll Road (£230,000 project)
- Improvements to the Old Sleat Road (£240,000)
- Development of Portree mobility hubs
- Future paths in Portree, Edinbane, Broadford, Raasay and South Skye
Cllr John Finlayson welcomed the progress and emphasised the council’s commitment to improving local infrastructure.
Nairnshire’s estimated £682,495 allocation will fund resurfacing at five priority locations, including Cairn Avenue and routes at Little and Meikle Kildrummie. A further £25,000 is set aside for footpaths and £75,000 for major patching. Eleven additional sites have been identified, should extra funding become available.
Sutherland’s indicative £2.37m budget will support a multi‑year programme covering 220 prioritised locations. Works include resurfacing, surface dressing and edge strengthening, with councillors highlighting the importance of being ready to deliver as soon as funds are released.
