Hillhouse Group delivers concrete to help power 45,000 Scottish homes

The project team
Hillhouse Quarry Group has successfully delivered a landmark supply of 3,600m³ of high-grade concrete for the Mill Rig Wind Farm, a flagship renewable energy project near Darvel in East Ayrshire.
Developed by OnPath Energy and constructed by RJ McLeod, the wind farm will generate 33.4 MW of clean energy, enough to power more than 45,000 Scottish homes and play a significant role in helping Scotland meet its net-zero targets.
The delivery for Mill Rig Wind Farm involved six continuous foundation pours of 600 m³ each, supported by a fleet of 15 delivery vehicles. Concrete was supplied from three key locations: Hillhouse’s Rapid R3000 plant based in Troon, a Rapid R4000 plant on London Road in Glasgow and an on-site McCrory MCM60 mobile plant, ensuring a seamless and efficient supply operation throughout the project.
Hillhouse Quarry Group’s ability to manage every stage of the process supported the delivery and success of the project. The specialist concrete provider was able to utilise high-quality stone and sand from its Troon and Garpel Quarries to supply the contract.
Combining both materials meant local people and local produce delivered all the concrete for the site, ensuring top quality from the ground right through to the final pour.
Robert McNaughton, managing director, Hillhouse Group, said: “The support and delivery of ready mix concrete, utilising mobile operations for the local project at Mill Rig Wind Farm has been a real milestone for Hillhouse Quarry Group. We’re proud to play our part in a project that not only supports Scotland’s drive towards a more sustainable future but also delivers lasting benefits for the local community.
“By supplying the materials and expertise needed to make this development a reality, we’re helping to power homes, create opportunities, and contribute to a greener, more resilient Scotland.”
Collaboration was at the heart of the project, with Hillhouse working closely alongside RJ McLeod, one of Scotland’s leading civil engineering contractors on behalf of OnPath Energy, a developer recognised for its sustainable and community-focused renewable projects. This partnership ensured excellence in delivery, quality, and safety at every stage.
Martin Kellerman, construction director at OnPath, added: “Mill Rig Wind Farm represents another important step in our mission to deliver sustainable, community-focused renewable energy across Scotland. By working cross-sector, we’ve been able to combine technical excellence with a strong local supply chain to deliver clean, secure energy for over 45,000 homes.”
Beyond its energy contribution, the Mill Rig Wind Farm also supports the local community through a dedicated community fund, creating long-term benefits for the surrounding area and helping to foster skills development and sustainability initiatives.
Shakthivelu Thangavel, project manager at RJ McLeod, commented: “Delivering the civil engineering works for Mill Rig Wind Farm has been a significant project for RJ McLeod, and we’re pleased to have worked alongside OnPath Energy and Hillhouse Quarry Group to bring it to life. The scale and complexity of the foundation pours demanded careful planning, seamless logistics, and close collaboration between all partners.
“Our team is proud to contribute to a development that will provide renewable energy to tens of thousands of Scottish homes and help drive Scotland’s transition towards a more sustainable energy future as well as paving the way for skills development in our emerging workforce.”
As Scotland continues to invest in renewable infrastructure, Hillhouse Quarry Group’s expertise in large-scale, complex concrete delivery reinforces its reputation as a critical partner for major construction and energy projects. The company’s integrated approach, from quarry to construction site, ensures efficiency, quality, and reliability across every sector it serves.
