Big-hearted West Lothian man Charlie Smillie has donated a work bonus to charity.

The mechanical engineer was voted Employee of the Month by his bosses at John Heaney Electrical (JHE) in Livingston.

However, instead of spending his award on his family at Christmas, Charlie, from Fauldhouse, chose to donate the cash to Cancer Research UK.
“It was a tremendous gesture from Charlie,” said JHE Managing Director Mark Heaney.

“We introduced the reward scheme earlier this year to recognise the efforts of the staff.

“It would have been very tempting for Charlie to spend the money on himself or his family at this time of year but to give it away to charity shows the kind of person he is.”

JHE’s have been long-time supporters of charitable causes, particularly local ones.

This year alone has seen the company support West Lothian mental health counselling service SMILE, Forth One’s Mission Christmas and Cash For Kids along with a number of others.

“As a business we like to support local worthy causes,” added Mr Heaney.

“It is something we have done for a number of years as we are firm believers in giving back where possible. It’s nice to be able to help make a difference to lives in some way.”
