Johnston Carmichael builds on construction and property incentives expertise with senior tax specialist hire

Alison McGlashan

Accountancy and business advisory firm Johnston Carmichael has grown its construction and property incentives expertise with the appointment of a new tax specialist.

Alison McGlashan has been appointed as a director in the company’s Inverness office, strengthening its tax expertise in capital allowances and other construction and property incentives.

Joining from a Big Four firm, Alison brings with her more than 20 years’ experience in corporation tax, 16 of which have been focused specifically on construction and property incentives, including capital allowances.

Her role will see her work closely with clients to help them unlock optimal tax reliefs from property investment - whether through acquisition/disposal, construction, refurbishment or fit-out – or fixed asset investment more generally, taking into account the interaction with other taxes and the taxpayer’s self-assessment obligations.

The appointment strengthens Johnston Carmichael’s construction and property incentives team and senior expertise in the region, on the back of two recent partner promotions in Inverness, Allison Dalton and Martin Bannerman.

Alison McGlashan said: “Johnston Carmichael stood out to me as a firm that truly understands the value of specialist tax knowledge in supporting clients’ ambitions, especially in sectors where fixed asset investment plays a central role.

“The Capital Allowances regime has gone through much change in recent years, and with more valuable reliefs has come more layers of complexity. This makes it a challenging but rewarding area to work in. The opportunity to join a firm with such a strong reputation across Scotland and the UK was a major draw.

“I’m excited to bring my capital allowances and other specialist tax experience to clients across our various sectors, and to help ensure they are maximising available reliefs during what is a highly dynamic time in the tax landscape.”

A Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser, Alison has advised clients across a wide range of sectors including retail, manufacturing, food and drink, real estate, energy and infrastructure.

The firm’s construction and property incentives team supports a diverse portfolio of clients across all sectors and have a blend of tax and surveying and construction expertise which allows them to interact with architects, consulting engineers and project managers with first-hand knowledge

David Ward, partner and head of specialist tax at Johnston Carmichael, said: “We’re really pleased to welcome Alison to the team. Her depth of knowledge in capital allowances, coupled with her specialist expertise, is a real asset to our business and will bring significant value to our clients.

“Alison’s appointment adds further strength to our well-established construction and property incentives team, which includes a partner and another director. While Alison is based in our Inverness office, her experience enhances the support we offer to clients throughout the UK.”
