Residents of a Perth care home enjoyed some early Christmas cheer as a new walkway was unveiled.

Tayside civil engineering contractor Kilmac designed, installed and donated the facility at Viewlands House, which is part of the UK-wide Abbeyfield charity.

Viewlands House trustee Alistair Barn welcomed Kilmac’s support for a project which will enhance the quality of life enjoyed by residents.

“The annexe was built four years ago but it was proving difficult to provide safe winter access for residents because of the sloping ground,” he explained.

“The trustees contacted Kilmac director Athole McDonald for advice and the upshot was the generous gesture to create the new 20-metre walkway. It is hugely appreciated.

“Kilmac works manager Jimmy Riddoch designed it and now that the walkway has been completed residents have been enjoying the World Cup on a big screen and it will host various Festive gatherings.”

The main B-listed, 32-bedroom building is close to the annexe, but a combination of rough tarmac and a steep slope presented challenges to residents using wheelchairs and walking aids.

Kilmac came to the rescue by offering to install a new smooth access path and a walkway with a handrail, so that residents can now visit the annexe independently.

Athole McDonald said: “I live in the neighbourhood so I am well aware of what a fabulous facility Viewlands House is and how lucky we are in Perth to have it.

“When I heard of the challenges being posed for residents and staff eager to make the most of the annexe, I was happy to give them a helping hand.

“The team from Kilmac enjoyed working on the project. They could see what a difference it was going to make to the residents and their quality of life.

“We were really keen to ensure the new pathway and handrail was ready in time for Viewlands House to make the most of the Festive Season.”
