Lifetime Achievement Award for SELECT ex-managing director Alan Wilson

Former SELECT managing director Alan Wilson has been given the trade body’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his more than four decades of service to the construction industry in Scotland.

Sponsored by Schneider Electric, the award was presented to Wilson by association president Darren Crockett on 25 September at the 2026 SELECT President’s Lunch at The Balmoral in Edinburgh.

In August, Wilson retired after 12 years with SELECT, including seven in his managing director role, having played a pivotal role in shaping SELECT.

Presenting the award at the lunch, sponsored by Luceco Group, Crockett paid tribute to Wilson’s dedication to the sector and his leadership during some of the most testing periods in the industry.

Crockett said: “Alan has been a tireless advocate for our industry throughout an exceptional career spanning more than 40 years.

“His knowledge, integrity and leadership have earned him enormous respect not only across Scotland but throughout the wider construction sector.

“His contribution during the COVID pandemic was particularly significant.”

Crockett added: “At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, Alan brought organisations together to establish the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum, creating a single voice for the industry and ensuring contractors’ concerns were heard at the highest levels of government.

“Throughout his time at SELECT, Alan has helped drive significant progress for the association, introducing new initiatives, strengthening membership and championing apprenticeships to help secure the future of the profession.”

Wilson said: “While my name may be on the trophy, it really reflects the support, commitment and hard work of the many colleagues, members, presidents and industry partners I have had the privilege to work alongside throughout my career.

“The construction industry has given me tremendous opportunities, and I have always believed in the importance of standing up for contractors, improving standards and ensuring our industry has a strong and respected voice.”

Wilson added: “Seeing the sector come together during difficult times and continue to innovate and adapt has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.”

Wilson, who has a Master’s degree in Construction Law, has spent over 40 years championing the interests of contractors through a career background across trade associations, the private sector and public sector organisations.

Sharon Miller, who replaced Wilson as managing director, said: “Alan’s … leadership, strategic vision and unwavering commitment to members have helped transform the association and strengthen its reputation across government, industry and beyond.

“He has always been passionate about supporting electrical contractors and ensuring they have a strong voice on the issues that matter most.”

Miller added: “Whether championing apprenticeships, improving industry standards or advocating for fairer business practices, Alan consistently put the interests of members at the heart of everything he did.”
