Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA) and McTaggart Construction have unveiled early plans to deliver social homes on a former mill site in Selkirk.

The old Heather Mills is located on the southern edge of Selkirk and is bounded by South Bridge Street to the south-west, Whinfield Road to the south-east, Riverside Road to the north-west and a commercial yard and private house to the north-east.

A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) submitted to Scottish Borders Council does not outline the exact number of properties to be built, but the proposal is described as a “major development”.

It states: “The proposal is a new low-rise social housing development comprising two-storey dwellings and cottage flats, all with private gardens, and is classified as a major development.

“The scheme, designed to integrate with the local context, aims to provide pedestrian routes that connect through the site and link to existing paths and the nearby waterfront, as well as meaningful green spaces.”

Two pre-application public meetings are to be held at SBHA’s main office in Selkirk on Thursday, February 26, and Thursday, March 26, both from 4pm to 7pm.

The submission adds: “The presentation will include presentation boards setting out the design principles and indicative layout, supported by a dedicated website providing the same information.

“Information leaflets summarising the proposals will be distributed in advance and made available at each event.”
