New College Lanarkshire students visit construction works at Ravenscraig

Students from New College Lanarkshire’s Motherwell Campus recently visited the construction site at Ravenscraig, as part of their HNC and HND courses in Computer Aided Draughting and Design (CADD) and Architectural Technology.
The site visit focused on Motus Commercials’ new 38,000 sqft commercial vehicle workshop and sales facility, which has commenced construction in Ravenscraig’s dedicated employment area, SevenFourEight. Students were given a guided tour by the project’s contractor, Davlyn Construction. This development represents a significant milestone in the regeneration of one of Europe’s largest former industrial sites.
The visit was coordinated by Kenneth Duffy, North Lanarkshire Provost and local councillor, alongside Russell Wilkie, director at Ravenscraig Ltd.
Russell Wilkie said: “Ravenscraig represents one of Europe’s most significant community regeneration initiatives, and New College Lanarkshire has consistently been a vital partner in this journey. Engaging students in the redevelopment process is essential, offering practical insights right on their doorstep. Hopefully, these young talents will someday contribute directly to future design and construction projects here at Ravenscraig.”

Kenneth Duffy, North Lanarkshire Provost and local representative, said: “Integrating the local community into the redevelopment of Ravenscraig is fundamental. Building strong connections with institutions like New College Lanarkshire helps to ensure that the skills learned today translate into opportunities tomorrow. Visits like this offer invaluable practical exposure and help bring their learning to life.”
Christopher Moore, principal and chief executive of New College Lanarkshire, said: “The students on the site visit represent the next generation of professionals in this crucial and dynamic field. I am delighted that they have had the opportunity to enhance and deepen their understanding of the Industry in such a clear and relevant way. This marks the beginning of a critical and important collaboration between New College Lanarkshire and Ravenscraig Ltd.”
Fraser Hainey, lecturer at New College Lanarkshire, added: “At New College Lanarkshire, we aim to blend theoretical knowledge with practical skills across our range of construction-related courses. On-site visits like this are crucial, allowing students to experience firsthand how draughting and design translate from plans to real-world applications. Our students thoroughly enjoyed their experience, and we look forward to seeing the project’s continued development, especially given its proximity to our Motherwell Campus.”
