Tenants have now begun to move into the properties in Nimmo Drive, created in two large buildings, which complement the existing and historic sandstone tenement landscape.

The total cost of the development is £11.2 million with £8.9m funded by Glasgow City Council through a housing association grant. The remaining £2.3m came from Elderpark Housing.

The development of the homes was undertaken by construction firm The JR Group on the site of a former ventilation factory and Elderpark’s community centre which had reached the end of its useful life.

Elderpark Housing said the homes were further evidence of its “deep rooted commitment” to keep on building affordable homes to address an ever-increasing need for housing in the city.

The homes are a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments. They include lift access, sustainable heating throughout the homes, sprinkler systems, extensive amenity space and internal and external bike storage for residents to make use of.

Elderpark has a strong track record of building homes for affordable rent – most recently with a distinctive curved apartment block of 70 homes and a further 12 terraced housing properties at Nethan Street close to Govan Cross.

Gary Dalziel, chief executive of Elderpark Housing, said: “Nimmo Drive is an important development in terms of delivering further essential affordable housing to rent within the Govan community.

“The properties provide new homes within a former space which had industrial use and an outdated community centre so to make best use of this land for new homes is extremely pleasing. Over the decades Elderpark has sought to build high-quality new homes throughout our community and we are appreciative of the support of Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government in making this outstanding development a reality.

“Elderpark doesn’t have our own in-house development expertise and would like to thank Trust Housing Association for acting as Development Agent. This is our first project with the JR Group, who are deeply passionate about Govan, and this has been shown in the care they have taken to construct these excellent flats.

“Building new homes is not a vanity project, it is because there is a need which cannot be met by existing provision and while it is exciting to see new houses being built what is much more important is seeing them become new homes for residents as we all appreciate the importance a home can have on someone’s life.”

The official launch of the Nimmo Drive homes was carried out by Glasgow City Council depute leader and Govan councillor Ricky Bell who has seen the development come full circle having attended the site launch in late 2024 when construction work got under way. He cut the ribbon on the doorstep of one of the properties.

Councillor Ricky Bell added: “It was great to be able to cut the ribbon on these much-needed affordable homes in the middle of Govan that show the council’s determination to keep delivering new homes in our communities – and especially the range of one to four bedroom properties that will provide the good mix that we need in the area.

“They already fit into the streetscape very nicely, and will hopefully be around for as long as the famous tenements beside them. I’ve been glad to work with Elderpark Housing almost from the start of the project when the site emerged, and credit should go to their team, along with Trust Housing and The JR Group for making it happen.”

Gary McGregor, managing director at The JR Group, added: “We are delighted to complete and hand over this attractive site at Nimmo Drive which has created 43 new homes to Elderpark Housing.

“From the outset, this project has been about much more than constructing new homes. “It is particularly rewarding to see the project reach completion and know that new residents will soon be able to make these apartments their homes.
