A free weekly running event aimed at encouraging young people aged 4 -14 and their families to get more active has launched in Linlithgow, thanks to the joint support of Linlithgow Athletic Club and Cala Homes (East).

The town’s first-ever junior Parkrun took place at the new West Lothian Cycle Circuit on Sunday, with 86 finishers and 21 volunteers taking part in the 2K route.

The event - which is run entirely by volunteers - has received the backing from the homebuilder, with Cala Homes (East) donating £2,000 to cover half the cost of setting up the weekly Parkrun, with the other half being donated directly by Linlithgow Athletic Club.

The cash boost means the family-friendly fun run can continue indefinitely, with organisers hopeful it will encourage more children in the area to get involved.

Ian Fyfe, junior Parkrun event director and Linlithgow Athletic Club Trustee, said: “This was a great start to our venture of bringing junior Parkrun to Linlithgow and we are very grateful to Cala and the Club for putting up the money we needed to get going.

“We will be here every Sunday ready for a 9:30am start and welcome anyone aged 4-14 to come along and run, jog, walk or wheelchair the course. It’s important to remember it’s not a race, and our aim is to reach out to children of all abilities to come and get some fresh air and exercise and get their Sundays off to a great start!”

Kim Newbigging, regional sales manager at Cala Homes (East), said: “We’re proud to be lending our support to the brand-new Linlithgow junior Parkrun, which we hope will benefit families in the area and beyond for years to come.

“Not only is this a fantastic weekly event and a great way to get kids active, but it’s a wonderful opportunity for young people to meet new members of the community and make new friends.

“This investment really underpins our commitment to investing in community-led initiatives like this in Linlithgow. Cala has developed a close affinity with the area thanks to our developments here – including the recently launched Preston Glade – and we’re thrilled to be continuing that sentiment. I’m delighted the town’s first junior Parkrun was a success and can’t wait to see it continue.”

Linlithgow junior Parkrun will take place at the new West Lothian Cycle Circuit every Sunday from 9:30am. To register to take part, visit the website.
