New £5.8m extension delivers enhanced facilities at West Lothian school

More and better facilities are available for pupils at Pinewood School in Blackburn, following the completion of a new £5.8 million extension.

An official opening was held for the new extension, which includes a games hall, dining spaces, additional classrooms and offices.

Pinewood delivers quality primary and secondary education for young people with complex needs from across West Lothian. The extension is the third to the school in recent years, and will deliver significant improvements to the learning environment for pupils and staff.

The works, which included demolishing the original block as well as external environmental improvements, are part of a major £26.5m investment programme in schools for pupils with additional support needs across West Lothian.

To mark the completion of the extension, a small opening ceremony was held for school pupils and invited guests, featuring music from Pinewood pupils.

Officially opening the extension, depute leader of West Lothian Council Kirsteen Sullivan said: “I’m delighted to see work completed on this fantastic new £5.8m extension for Pinewood.

“West Lothian has one of the best school estates in Scotland as we continue to prudently invest to ensure we have the best possible learning environment for all our pupils.

“I’m sure the enhanced facilities will make a real, positive difference in the educational experience for Pinewood pupils for many years to come.”

Pinewood Headteacher Pam Greig MBE said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome all the invited guests to Pinewood for the official opening of our wonderful new extension.

“At Pinewood, we focus on the wellbeing of all our children and young people, and deliver a meaningful broad-based education, which is both engaging and motivating.

“The new extension will help us to do this, and we are already making good use of the improved facilities in our learning.”

Hub South East has delivered the new facility on behalf of the council, with BAM Construction as the primary contractor.

Eileen Mackin, projects director for Hub South East, said: “I was delighted to be invited back for the official opening of Pinewood’s extension today, alongside colleagues from BAM Construction and other partners involved in the project’s successful delivery.

“We received such a warm welcome from pupils and it was fantastic see how they are thriving in their modern new learning space. We look forward to continuing our successful working relationship with West Lothian Council on future learning estate projects.”
