Twelve volunteers from the timber frame manufacturer, which is headquartered in Selkirk and operates as part of Barratt Redrow, spent the day lending their expertise to help transform the school’s playground.

Upgrades to the space included painting fences, laying mulch, adding wooden edging to soil beds and general maintenance of the playground.

By improving the playground, the team has helped create opportunities for more active play and informal learning experiences all of which are key to helping children thrive both academically and personally.

Staff at Wilton Primary School have praised the initiative, highlighting the immediate impact the improvements will have on pupils and teachers alike. The upgraded space is expected to support a wider range of activities throughout the school year, offering children a safe and inspiring environment to learn and explore.

Nina Inglis, deputy head teacher from Wilton Primary School, said: “Thanks to the team of volunteers from Oregon Timber Frame, pupils have been enjoying our refreshed playground space. It’s been great to see the pupils’ reactions, and they’ve certainly been putting the space to good use. This transformation came just in time for the spring and summer months when we encourage children and staff to spend more time outdoors, both at break times and outdoor learning during lessons.”

The importance of outdoor learning and play is increasingly recognised. Access to safe, stimulating outdoor environments plays a vital role in children’s physical health, mental wellbeing and social development.

Outdoor spaces provide opportunities for natural play, hands-on learning and environmental awareness, all of which support improved concentration, resilience and overall educational outcomes.

Beyond volunteering days, Oregon Timber Frame’s Community Fund supported through the Barratt Redrow Foundation provides donations of £1,500 to £3,000 to a different local charity each month to help the communities in which the business operates thrive. In 2025 alone, a total of £37,564 was donated to local Borders causes through this initiative.
