Paul McDevitt: Five reasons why I’m looking forward to the Scottish Construction Summit

Paul McDevitt
As the programme director of the inaugural Scottish Construction Summit, Paul McDevitt sets out five reasons why he’s really looking forward to this event and why hopefully you will be too.
The current model isn’t working and is jeopardising the viability of the whole sector. The UK economy needs a vibrant and thriving construction sector to lead and drive economic growth. I believe the Summit provides delegates with the unique opportunity to hear directly from the industry disrupters who are driving the transition.
1. Learn from industry-leading speakers driving real change
The Scottish Construction Summit brings together a remarkable line-up of speakers who are at the forefront of transforming the industry. Keynote speaker Mark Farmer, a renowned UK construction expert and author of the influential “Modernise or Die” review, will share his insights on the urgent need for industry reform.
Other distinguished speakers include Professor Bill Minnis, a global authority on leadership and transition; Yosof Ewing, a leading advocate for fair commercial practices; Anne Johnstone and Sarah Peterson, are sustainability and ESG experts; and Graham Stewart and Gordon Mitchell are digitalisation pioneers. Alan Tait and Professor Steve Petrie are leading experts in recruitment and retention within the construction sector. The collective expertise of all the speakers will ensure delegates gain actionable knowledge from those actively shaping the future of the sector.
2. Address the broken construction model
Having undertaken a robust consultation with industry experts and commentators, I firmly feel the current construction model is unsustainable, with razor-thin margins, fragmented risk allocation, and late payments threatening the stability of the entire supply chain. The Summit will directly confront these issues, exploring how to transition to a fairer, more resilient commercial model that supports equitable treatment for all, from SMEs to major contractors. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the conversation on how to fix a system that no longer serves the industry or society.
3. Tackle critical industry challenges
The event is structured around four pivotal themes: The Commercial Model, Recruitment and Retention, Sustainability, and Digitalisation. Each theme will be explored in depth, uncovering both the challenges and opportunities they present. With the sector facing a net loss of skilled workers, high apprenticeship dropout rates, and the urgent need to decarbonise, the Summit offers practical strategies and solutions to address these pressing issues.
4. Shape a more equitable and sustainable future
With the built environment responsible for 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions, the construction sector is central to achieving net zero by 2050. The Summit will provide delegates with the latest thinking and best practices on sustainability, from retrofitting existing buildings to adopting innovative materials and digital tools. Attendees will leave equipped to drive positive change in their own organisations and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable industry.
5. Network and collaborate with industry leaders
This event is designed to foster innovation and collaboration, bringing together major players, SMEs, and experts from across the Scottish construction sector. I’m really excited by the innovative Breakout Sessions in the afternoon. Delegates will have the chance to network, exchange ideas, and build partnerships that can accelerate progress and open new opportunities.
The leaders of the Breakout Sessions will then report back on the outputs from each of the four sessions. Thus, allowing delegates to learn from each session. With a host of relevant exhibitors and ample time to network, the Summit is the ideal platform to connect with those leading the transition and to play an active role in shaping the industry’s future.
The Scottish Construction Summit takes place on 17th September 2025 at the Technology and Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. This is a pivotal moment for the industry.
