JML Contracts Ltd, the family-run Perthshire business, is the first Scottish company to receive a national industry award in its category for a custom build house project it undertook in Angus.

The family-run housebuilder, which specialises in building using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) received the award from Build It magazine at a ceremony, hosted by the comedian Marcus Brigstocke, in London.

Facing tough competition from across the UK, JML Contracts was awarded first place in the ‘Best SIPs Home’ category due to the innovative approach it took to a very complex project.

This national awards programme has been run by Build It magazine for six years, and this year saw businesses enter projects across 25 categories in the self and custom build markets.

John Langley, Director of JML Contracts, said: “We were absolutely delighted to receive this award. We did face stiff competition from other, much larger businesses in this category and were pleased that the judges identified the complexity of this project and choose us. They commented particularly on our innovative approach to the structural engineering of the project and our commitment to delivering a project that otherwise would have been unachievable within the budget had we not used SIPs. Winning awards like this, on a national stage, really highlights the quality and service that our whole team offers. This is a great win for everyone at JML Contracts.”

The project was the construction of a roundhouse and bothy self-build project overlooking the farmlands of Angus. Although disguised as a traditional farm building, the cutting-edge engineering shows off a cathedralesque roundhouse with amazing panoramic views.

This project has also been shortlisted in the Best Custom and Self Build category in Structural Timber Awards 2017 which take place on October 10.
