Planning application submitted for Grant Lodge refurbishment

Moray Council has submitted a planning application for the regeneration of Grant Lodge, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of the Cultural Quarter as part of the Moray Growth Deal.

The proposed plans, prepared by an experienced design team led by Page/Park Architects, will breathe new life into the historic Grant Lodge building, transforming it into a vibrant heritage, tourism and events hub for the region.

Since 2023, the project team has consulted with over 600 people to develop the plans for Grant Lodge. This development will complement other projects within the Cultural Quarter, which aims to create a dynamic space celebrating Moray’s rich heritage, arts, and community spirit.

Leader of Moray Council, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, said: “The submission of this planning application is a major step forward in our commitment to revitalising Elgin’s town centre. Grant Lodge has long been a cherished landmark, and its regeneration will provide a focal point for culture and creativity, benefiting residents and visitors alike.”

The Cultural Quarter initiative, announced in previous updates on the Moray Growth Deal, will see coordinated investment in key sites across Elgin, including Grant Lodge, to enhance cultural infrastructure and boost economic growth. The Moray Growth Deal is backed by £100 million of investment from the UK and Scottish Governments, Moray Council, and regional partners, with £21m allocated specifically for Cultural Quarter projects.

Page\Park Architects said: “We’re thrilled to be leading the delivery of this transformative project at Grant Lodge.

“We believe deeply in celebrating the exemplar heritage in our unique towns and cities and using heritage as an agent for local change and regeneration. The project’s ambition is to blend carefully restored heritage spaces with sensitive contemporary extensions to provide a range of flexible, high-quality spaces for local, regional and national visitors. Grant Lodge will become a gateway to the region and a place to gather for occasions of all kinds.

“We’re excited for the doors of Grant Lodge to open once again and allow the community to feel ownership of a building that is much loved and holds fond memories to so many.”

Subject to planning approval and sufficient additional funding, work on Grant Lodge is expected to take place between 2027-2029. The regenerated building will offer flexible spaces to welcome visitors for exhibitions, events, social and recreational activities. Once complete, Grant Lodge will be a key destination for local people and visitors alike, shining a light on Moray’s unique heritage while reinstating the building to the heart of the community for generations to come.
