Plans for up to 135 homes in Clune Park approved in principle

The new homes will replace the now-demolished buildings at Clune Park

Inverclyde Council’s planning board has approved a plan in principle to build up to 135 new homes in Clune Park.

An application to establish the principle of building the new development was approved unanimously at the recent meeting of the planning board.

Clune Park in Port Glasgow is currently undergoing a massive redevelopment after decades of decline.

The council has been proactively acquiring properties in Clune Park for a number of years and now owns over half the estate.

The vast majority of the estate is derelict and unoccupied and the residential blocks, former school and the old church buildings were all badly affected by deliberate fires and anti-social behaviour in recent years which has contributed to the deterioration of the properties.

Phase one of the redevelopment began in April 2025 and is complete with the former school, church and resource centre south of Robert Street all demolished and cleared. Phase two to demolish many of the dangerous and unsafe residential buildings between Robert Street and Glasgow Road is currently underway.

The plan agreed includes a mixture of 1 and 2-bedroom flats and 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes. In line with local planning priorities, 25% of the homes will be affordable housing.

The application is accompanied by a supporting masterplan for the Clune Park estate which includes layouts showing how the site could be developed. A link to this is under Related Links.

Councillor Stephen McCabe, leader of Inverclyde Council, said: “This is an important step in the council’s regeneration of Clune Park.

“We need new houses in Inverclyde and Clune Park is in an ideal location.

“This has been a long time coming. Although the approval is only for planning in principle, it’s essential to move forward and attract housing developers to see the potential in Clune Park.

“Phase one of the masterplan is complete and phase two is well underway. I look forward to seeing the transformation of Clune Park as it continues to develop.”
