In 2021, the school building opened with a roll of 32 pupils. Since then, the roll has increased to 337 pupils across primaries one to seven and 108 early years spaces. It is projected to hit 456 primary children by 2030.

In 2015, planning approval was given for 809 new homes, a sports pitch and changing facilities at Letham Mains, prompting the need for a new primary school. 

The council secured funding from developers at the time to fully fund the construction of the school. In 2021, an additional 252 homes were given the green light. 

From the start of the project, a phased approach to construction was employed, with the building designed to cater for future expansion via a flexible layout that retains accessibility to shared and external areas. 

An expansion of the dining space, four classrooms and associated additional facilities including toilets form part of the extension plans.

Contributions from developers have been secured for the project.

East Lothian Council’s cabinet member for Education and Children’s and Family Services, Councillor Fiona Dugdale, said: “There are strict rules around gathering developers’ contributions towards vital infrastructure. 

“In the case of schools, we can only secure funding directly linked to the approved development at the time.

“Had we built a school in anticipation of future growth, not only would the additional space have had to be financed from our council funds, we would also have no recourse to now return to the developers for an increased contribution.”

Dugdale added: “It would also have been a risk to build a larger school than required at the time.

“Instead, our teams purposely designed a school with a layout and external space that could accommodate expansion.”

If approved, works are scheduled to start in the summer next year for completion by August the following year.
