Plans submitted to turn Glasgow’s former Dunnes Stores building into hotel

The former Dunnes Stores building on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street could be turned into a “boutique” hotel, under plans submitted to the council.

An application was submitted to Glasgow City Council to convert the property, which was most recently home to Dunnes Stores, reports The Herald.

A three-storey rooftop extension has been proposed to deliver a 144-bedroom hotel with a “destination restaurant and bar” alongside a roof terrace.

The building, at the junction of Sauchiehall Street and Cambridge Street, has been empty since Dunnes closed in 2017.

The building was constructed in 1929.

“[V]isible evidence of prolonged disuse, including localised deterioration, vegetation growth and weathering,” the plans state.

The current building would be retained and refurbished, with the extension enabling another two floors of hotel accommodation, under the plans.

The main entrance to the hotel would be located on Cambridge Street, and the restaurant would “occupy the prominent Sauchiehall Street corner”.

In the planning documents, One Cambridge Developments and Willstone Ventures Ltd are the two companies named as the applicant.

On Companies House, Harinder Bassi is named as the director of both companies.

In June, a public consultation event on the proposed reuse of the building took place.

In 2020, former plans to deliver a 112-bed hotel on the site were withdrawn.
