Progress for work to deliver new footbridge at Cardenden station

Work to install a new £5 million footbridge at Cardenden station is advancing, forming part of the project to electrify and modernise the railway in Fife.

Drone footage shows the new steel structure above the tracks being lifted into place.

Once delivered, the bridge will give step-free access between platforms with two new lifts, supporting passengers with reduced mobility or those travelling with luggage or prams.

It has been built higher than the existing structure to allow for room for overhead wires through the station.

These will deliver power for new battery-electric trains being brought into Fife in the coming years.

With the new structure in place, teams will turn their focus towards fitting out the bridge and installing and commissioning the lifts before it opens to passengers in Spring 2027.

Remaining in use for now, the old footbridge will be removed once the new bridge has opened.

Michael McArthur, project manager at Network Rail Scotland, said: “Cardenden has served passengers for nearly 180 years, and the old footbridge will be familiar to the generations of people who travel to and from the station.

“The railway is changing though, and we need to make sure our stations change with it.”

McArthur added: “The new bridge will help us create a more accessible, modern environment while preparing the railway for electrification.”
