Roughly 80 truckloads of steel are scheduled to be delivered to the site as work continues on the new £124 million school campus, with construction having started in March this year. 

The new facility is being constructed on the playing fields of the existing school, enabling the new academy to stay operational during the period of construction. 

The academy is due to be operational in August 2028, while the demolition of the current school buildings and the completion of external sporting facilities is anticipated to be delivered by summer 2029.

Councillor Martin Greig, convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Seeing the steel framework progressing is an exciting milestone and allows people to appreciate the scale of the new Hazlehead Academy Campus taking shape. 

“This significant investment in our school estate will create a modern, high-quality learning environment where future generations of young people can thrive, supporting learning, achievement and wellbeing.”

Councillor Lee Fairfull, vice-convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “The new campus will transform educational provision for pupils across the area and create outstanding opportunities for learning, sport and community use.”

Once completed, the new campus will cater for for up to 1,600 pupils and will include two all-weather pitches and an athletics sprint track. 

Hub North Scotland, Aberdeen City Council’s development partner, is delivering the project with construction work being carried out by Robertson Construction Group.

The new campus is the first project to start construction as part of the North Schools Programme, a hub North Scotland initiative that brings together five local authorities to provide new school buildings in the north of Scotland.
