£1m project to help future-proof Stranraer railway line

More than £1 million is being invested in the Stranraer railway line this month as Network Rail carries out essential improvements.

Between 28 November and 8 December, teams will carry out vital drainage upgrades along key sections of track, using over 2,000 tonnes of materials to help prevent flooding and keep services running reliably. Markdh No.1 Level Crossing will also be upgraded, and structures and embankments will be inspected.

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, said: “We’re investing in essential improvements to help keep this route reliable for the communities that depend on it. Strengthening drainage and inspecting key assets will help make the line more resilient to Scotland’s challenging weather, ensuring services can continue to run smoothly.

“We know this work means short-term changes to journeys, and we apologise for any inconvenience it will cause. Our teams will be working hard to complete the upgrades as quickly and safely as possible, and we appreciate passengers’ patience while we deliver this important project.”
