Between 19 October and 10 November, engineers worked around the clock to renew around 4.5 miles of track between Achnashellach and Strathcarron, replacing worn rails, around 2,000 sleepers and ballast (the stone which supports the track). Upgrade work was also carried out at the level crossing at Achnashellach Station. 

Key structures were inspected along the line, checking bridges and culverts remain in good condition. Lineside ditches and drainage were also cleared to reduce the risk of flooding and weather-related days.  

The investment is part of Network Rail’s commitment to operating a safe and reliable railway, protecting the route for the long-term and ensuring it continues to support remote Highland communities and the thousands of visitors who travel it each year. 

Scott McMurchie, scheme project manager, said: “The Kyle Line isn’t just one of the most scenic rail journeys in Scotland, it’s a lifeline for the communities it serves across the Highlands. It means a lot to people, whether they’re travelling for work, school, or simply to enjoy the local area. 

“The work we’ve carried out was essential to keep the line safe and reliable for years to come. We know how important it is to look after routes like this, and we’re proud to have delivered improvements that will benefit passengers and the wider region.
