The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is working with AAT (The Association of Accounting Technicians) to promote an entry-level finance course for its members.
The Business Finance Basics course is a three-hour session consisting of six modules including video tutorials and interactive learning, which tests the knowledge of the student as they learn.
Some of the key topics the course covers include:
- The basics of bookkeeping
- The basics of financial statements
- How to analyse financial statements
- The basics of cash flow
- The basics of budgeting
- How to create a budget
Laura Pacey, chief commercial officer at RICS, said: “Organising finance for the first time in any business is a daunting task and this fundamentals course helps RICS members master its key principles. Partnering with the globally respected AAT to deliver a rigorous and engaging finance course to our members was a natural choice, to provide a learning experience that enhances financial confidence going forth.
“A significant proportion of surveyors are sole proprietors where self-service finance is preferable, or work at boutique practices where a broad administrative skillset is especially valued. This course will unlock the world of finance, helping surveyors to make better decisions and grow their business, while reducing potential risks and overheads. It is a great introduction that prepares members for the more advanced finance courses for built environment professionals offered by RICS.”
Commenting on the partnership, Isla Billett, membership, commercial and charity product director at AAT, said: “Financial literacy is a vital skill for every profession, no matter the role. Partnering with RICS is a fantastic way to invest further into this valuable area and bring essential financial skills to surveyors in an accessible, flexible and practical format. This course gives members the confidence to manage bookkeeping, budgeting and cashflow effectively, helping them make informed decisions that support their business and clients.”
RICS will host a free webinar with AAT to introduce the course to members in October.
