The refurbishment of the Royal College Robotics South Laboratory for the University of Strathclyde emerged victorious at the Learning Spaces Scotland Awards 2023.

The cutting-edge facility secured the coveted Refurbishment of the Year Award, affirming the University’s facilities are some of the best in Scotland and across Europe.

The Learning Spaces Scotland Awards, which celebrates excellence in the sector, recognised the University Robotics South Laboratory for how its refurbishment has positively impacted student and staff educational and research experience. The facility is a testament to the seamless integration of modern robotics technology within a heritage-listed building.

Designed by ECD Architects, the Robotics South Laboratory project involved the refurbishment and reconfiguration of an existing space within the University of Strathclyde listed Royal College building for the provision of a cutting-edge robotically-enabled sensing (RES) Hub to accommodate advanced robotics operation and inspection areas, laser scanning equipment, and optical tables to be run by the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering (CUE) – one of the largest research groups of its kind worldwide. The new facility houses 11 robots and a group working spaces to enable collaborative working to drive research, innovation and training.

This was ECD’s 3rd project win this year. In June, the new build Passivhaus scheme designed by ECD in Drymen for Hanover Scotland won the Affordable Housing category at the Scottish Home Awards and in September the ECD designed Nevendon Place for Basildon Borough Council was the winner of Best Partnership (0-100 Homes) category at the Inside Housing Development Awards.

The Learning Spaces Scotland Awards 2023 ceremony, held on 14 November, is an integral part of the Learning Places Scotland conference which showcases some of the most innovative solutions within the sector. For a full list of winners click here.
