Renewables firm RWE has successfully completed its Camster II Onshore Wind Farm in Caithness.
The 36 megawatts (MW) project was first consented in July 2021 and construction started in 2023. It first generated electricity in March 2026 and is now fully operational with the capacity to power the equivalent of around 51,000 typical homes.
Sopna Sury, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “By completing Camster II we’ve once again demonstrated RWE’s expertise in delivering onshore wind farms, while creating meaningful value for local communities and economies.
“Each turbine that’s turning is a visible sign of RWE’s continued progress in onshore renewables and is a tremendous success for our teams on site, for the communities in Caithness and for Scotland’s energy transition. My thanks go to everyone involved for achieving this milestone safely and efficiently.”
Camster II is RWE’s fourth operational wind farm in Caithness, adding to a growing cluster that delivers significant economies of scale and helps strengthen local job security.
Principal contractor Farrans supported over 50 roles during the construction works, welcomed two early careers civil engineering students and an apprentice. The contractor also appointed 54% of all its subcontractors from within 20 miles of the site, including Gow Earthworks, GMR Hendersons and John Gunn and Sons, and representing 56% of the total subcontract spend.
Camster II will now use locally based engineers and experts for operations and maintenance, further reinforcing local job security. While Farrans is continuing to work with RWE, this time supporting the construction of its Golticlay wind farm.
Patrick Murray, regional director for Farrans, said: “We are delighted to see Camster II now supplying homes and contributing to our national renewable energy targets. Our extensive portfolio in delivering onshore wind farms and our long history of operations in Scotland meant that we were well placed to be the main contractor for RWE, a client we have developed an excellent longstanding relationship with.”
