SBF marks 130 years with Building Safety Bill insight at AGM

The Scottish Building Federation (SBF) preceded its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last week with a timely look at a topical situation, reinforcing its long-standing impact on the construction industry over its 130-year history.

Held at The Merchants House of Glasgow, the AGM was preceded by a legislative briefing from Michael Conroy, partner with Harper Macleod LLP, who provided expert insight into the Building Safety Act and its UK-wide application - introduced after the Grenfell Tower fire – as well as the Scottish Government’s devolved measures.

New estimates from the Scottish Government suggest that assessing and remediating government-supported buildings in Scotland could require public funding in the range of £1.7 billion to £3.1bn, estimated over a potential 15-year programme of works.

It had previously been estimated that about 900 buildings were affected, whereas the government says up to 1,450 residential buildings may need remediation work, including about 250 high-rises.

The free briefing event was open to anyone in the industry and showcased the SBF’s dedication to informing everyone about their responsibilities and future expectations.

It was held as part of the calendar of events to celebrate the Federation’s 130th anniversary, which include a unique golf tournament in Carnoustie in September and bespoke AI in construction training sessions to be rolled out across the country in the autumn. The celebrations will culminate in the prestigious President’s Lunch in Edinburgh in November.

Operations director Paul Mitchell said: “It was a great turnout for the first in our programme of events to celebrate the Scottish Building Federation’s 130th anniversary.

“We are grateful to Michael Conroy of Harper Macleod for sharing his legal expertise on the Building Safety Act with business leaders and construction professionals, and giving context to what is a complex situation.

“The continued engagement from our members and the wider industry shows that we remain at the forefront of the sector; advancing new technologies, interpreting contemporary legislation and promoting our modern industry whilst also continuing to deliver personalised business support services directly to our growing membership.”
