SBHA completes 16 affordable homes in Jedburgh

Families will be moving into brand-new affordable homes in Jedburgh in time for Christmas, as Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA) completes the first phase of its largest ever development.

Sixteen modern, spacious homes at the former Howdenburn Primary School site have now been handed over from delivery partner Cruden Homes, marking a significant milestone in SBHA’s 70-home transformation of the town.

The development has already seen overwhelming demand, with more than 350 applications for just 16 homes, highlighting both the acute local housing need and the importance of sustained investment in new homes across the Scottish Borders.

The Howdenburn project forms a key part of SBHA’s 300-home by 2028 programme, creating opportunities for local families to stay rooted in their communities while supporting skills, construction and economic growth in the region.

When complete, the new neighbourhood will include one- to four-bedroom homes set in a safe, green and welcoming environment, transforming the vacant school site into a thriving new place for people to live, grow and build their futures. Street names chosen by the Community Council - Capon Gardens, Capon Court and Capon Drive - reflect local history and pay tribute to one of the oldest trees in Jed Forest.

Julia Mulloy, chief executive of SBHA, said: “Handing over new homes in time for Christmas makes this milestone even more special. Behind every key are families who have been waiting a long time for a home they can truly afford, in a place they feel they belong.

“Demand for high-quality, affordable homes in the Borders has never been greater and that’s why SBHA is committed to delivering 300 new homes by 2028 - homes that help people stay close to the places, schools, jobs and support networks that matter to them. The support of the Scottish Government and Scottish Borders Council has been essential in bringing this project to life, alongside the commitment and expertise of our partners Cruden Homes and Aitken Turnbull.”

Fraser Lynes, CEO of Cruden, said: “The completion of this first phase marks a significant step forward in creating a vibrant new neighbourhood for Jedburgh. These homes respond to the clear and growing need for high-quality, affordable housing in the area, and it’s fantastic to see the first residents preparing to move in.

“Alongside delivering modern, energy-efficient homes, this development has been carefully designed to include generous green space and safe, welcoming streets, creating a place that people will be proud to call home. With our strong partnership with SBHA and the wider project team, we’re well on track to deliver the full 70 homes for the community.”

The completion of Phase One keeps the project firmly on track to deliver all 70 homes, supporting local employment, construction skills and long-term growth in the Scottish Borders.
