Scottish Event Campus welcomes UK government’s funding pledge for expansion plans
The Scottish Event Campus (SEC) has welcomed confirmation from the UK government that it will contribute £6 million in funding to go towards the campus’ expansion plans, Destination SEC.
When setting out his Autumn Budget, Chancellor John Healey confirmed the UK government’s support of Scotland’s national events campus.
The £6m will be used to support the delivery of the initial phase of Destination SEC, which will improve and transform the campus.
The 64-acre riverside Glasgow campus comprises the OVO Hydro, SEC Armadillo and the SEC Centre.
The first phase of Destination SEC will focus on the redevelopment of the car park situated in front of the OVO Hydro. At a similar size to Glasgow’s George Square, the East Plaza and activation zone will deliver a new outdoor events space and civic location.
Since last month, when initial plans were unveiled, Destination SEC has been met with extensive support such as endorsement from Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government and other key stakeholders across the country.
Dom McKay, chief executive officer of the SEC, said: “This is extremely welcome news and a further endorsement from the UK Government of the vital role the SEC plays in underpinning Glasgow’s and Scotland’s position as a global events and conference destination.”
McKay added: “This welcome support, along with our wider Campus development plans, will allow us to not only significantly enhance our economic and social contribution but also secure the SEC’s and Scotland’s position as a leading international venue for live entertainment, conferences, and exhibitions for decades to come.
“The UK Government’s £6m funding will help deliver the first phase of our plans to develop our Campus for the next generation.”
Scottish secretary Douglas Alexander said: “Glasgow built the stage for COP26 and the Commonwealth Games, and this investment will help build the next one.
“By backing the SEC’s ambitious expansion plans with a £6 million commitment, the UK Government is helping to boost Scotland’s economy, create jobs, show the world Scotland means business, and ensure Glasgow remains a leading global events city.”
In 1985, the SEC first opened, and its subsequent development and expansion have been a contributor towards the wider regeneration of the River Clyde and neighbouring communities.
