Matt Bridgestock is managing director of John Gilbert Architects, an award-winning Glasgow practice recognised for its work in sustainable housing, community-led development and building performance.

His work focuses on how collaboration, research and evidence-led design can improve the quality, affordability and environmental performance of homes.

Matt has helped establish a number of partnerships that bring together architects, housing providers, contractors, universities and technical specialists. These include Passivhoos™, a design-and-build partnership created to deliver Passivhaus-quality homes to social housing standards, and Hab-Lab, developed with the University of Strathclyde to monitor building performance and better understand how homes work in use.

He is also a director of Sussed Sustainability, a joint venture supporting public-sector clients to set meaningful sustainability targets, improve building performance and use post-occupancy evaluation to inform future projects.

Matt and his team are currently working on around 40,000m² of projects targeting Passivhaus or zero-carbon performance. Through these projects, he is exploring how shared knowledge, technical innovation and long-term partnerships can help the housing sector move from ambitious targets to reliable, repeatable delivery.

Matt is an Approved Certifier of Design for Section 6, holds advanced RIAS accreditation in Sustainable Design and sits on the Passivhaus Trust Technical Panel. He is also vice chair of the Passivhaus Trust’s Scotland regional group and a former chair of the Scottish Ecological Design Association.
