Located off the A859 near Loch Stranndabhat, SSEN Transmission’s proposed 132kV Gas Insulated Switchgear substation would connect the Muaitheabhal (Uisenis) Wind Farm and manage power flows between circuits, enabling the safe and efficient transmission of clean energy to the wider grid. 

The project would also reinforce the island’s transmission system and strengthen the supply across the Western Isles through connections to the Lewis Hub and the proposed Stornoway Grid Supply Point. 

The application to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar follows an extensive project development and public consultation process, which resulted in significant changes to the proposals, including a reduction in the size of the development area. The proposal is currently being considered by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, with members of the public able to view the application and submit comments as part of the planning process until 15 July 2026. 

Lyle Cairns, project manager at SSEN Transmission, said: “Submitting our application for the Balallan Switching Station was a landmark moment for this project, which will play a key role in supporting the growth of clean energy generation in the Western Isles, while also strengthening local security of supply.

“In developing our proposals, we have worked to balance community and stakeholder feedback with the technical and environmental requirements of the project.

“As a result, we have made significant changes to the development boundary, reducing the size of the site to better reflect the needs of the project.
