Statom Group North to deliver groundworks and RC structures package for HMP Glasgow project
Statom Group North has been appointed by Kier to deliver a comprehensive groundworks and reinforced concrete (RC) structures package for the Central Facilities Building, the Front of House Building and several other ancillary buildings as part of the landmark new HMP Glasgow prison development.
The deal supports Kier’s £683.8 million programme to replace the ageing HMP Barlinnie with a modern, sustainable custodial facility.
Statom Group North will be responsible for delivering essential groundworks and RC structures works for several of the main elements of the prison: The Central Facilities Building, the Front of House Building, Estates Gardens & Horticulture Building and the Vehicle Lock.
Key components include:
• Groundworks and RC structures
• Underslab and external drainage works
• Extensive underslab gas and waterproofing installation
• Superstructure walls, cores and slabs
• Precast stairs and structures
• All craneage for the works
• Coordination with other subcontractors working on piling, precast elements, structural steel and externals
As a local company, headquartered just seven miles from the site, Statom Group North has been able to place local companies and local people at the heart of the project. From management to workforce, all of the labour is from the local area, externally hired plant will be from the local area and the vast majority of all materials will come from local companies.
Statom Group North said it expects in excess of 70% of its total spend to be in the local area.
Under Kier’s Strategic Projects stewardship, the firm is committed to minimising environmental impact through sustainable materials, resource management, and adherence to best practice civil and structural engineering.
Statom Group North will also maximise local economic benefit via local supply chain engagement, employment opportunities, and apprenticeships, and support Kier’s and the Scottish Prison Service’s ambitions for social value, including opportunities for local labour, training, and community benefit.
“Statom North is proud to be contributing our groundworks and concrete frame expertise to this transformative project for Glasgow,” said Kevin Graham, managing director at Statom North. “We look forward to working hand in hand with Kier and the Scottish Prison Service to deliver a project that is safe, sustainable and delivers long-term value for the community.”
