DYW Glasgow is promoting the variety of routes on offer to young people if they do not receive the results they were hoping for on Scottish Exam Results Day 2017.

The #nowrongpath campaign celebrates the many paths taken by people across Scotland who are now in interesting job roles, with a focus on the non-traditional routes out-with higher education.

Hosted by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, DYW Glasgow is the Scottish Government’s national strategy for strengthening links between schools and businesses, with the hope of reducing youth unemployment by 40% by 2021.

DYW Glasgow is asking people to post a photograph on social media today holding a sign with their name, what they did when they left school and what they are doing now. The campaign aims to show young people that there are a range of ways to access a variety of job roles – that there is #nowrongpath.

Many well-known faces across the city have already shown their support for the campaign including entertainer Fred MacAuley, as well as STV presenters Jennifer Reoch and David Farrell.

Taking part in the campaign launch, Jamie Nelson and Claire McArthur are both individuals who have progressed in successful careers without going down the traditional route of higher education.

24-year-old Jamie, who is set to complete his four-year joiner apprenticeship with City Building this week, started his career in the army after leaving school, serving in Afghanistan in 2012/13.

Claire, now a Home Care Coordinator with one of Glasgow’s biggest employers, Cordia (Services) LLP, went straight into the workforce as a secretary at a law firm after leaving school and is now managing carers after 11 years in a similar position.

Alison McRae, senior director of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Receiving exam results is a significant milestone in any young person’s life.

“It’s important that everyone is aware that there are many varied options to investigate in the workplace, as well as many routes to get into a job or kick-start a career.

“Developing Young Workforce Glasgow hopes to demonstrate just some of the great number of potential career choices and routes available through the #nowrongpath campaign.

“It is our hope that this helps to inspire and motivate the young people of our city as they receive this year’s results.”
