As part of its support for East Renfrewshire’s Developing the Young Workforce programme, and its commitment to the Scottish Government’s Young Persons’ Guarantee Scheme, Taylor Wimpey West Scotland hosted a site visit at its Duncarnock development in Barrhead for 14 students aged 15/16 from Barrhead High School and neighbouring St Luke’s High School to get an insight into the housebuilding industry.

The team at Taylor Wimpey also took the opportunity to highlight the choice of careers and various routes that are available for young people to get involved in this exciting industry sector.

During their visit to the site in Barrhead the students had the opportunity to see the various stages of construction of a new home, visit the sales information centre and showhomes, as well as the chance to get valuable career advice from the team.

Paul Cunningham, production manager for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland enjoyed meeting the students and being part of the experience as he explained: “I hope that our on-site session has helped the students to develop their understanding of the housebuilding industry and how they can perhaps play a future role in it.

“We’re always looking for fresh talent to join our industry and sessions like this give us the opportunity to remind students of the wealth of possibilities that are available if you consider a career in house building.

“Today, more than ever, there are so many different ways you can take the next step towards your career ambitions.

“Whether students choose to go straight to college or university, opt for a Modern Day Apprenticeship or perhaps the opportunity to work and learn at the same time through day-release college courses there are lots of ways to make the step towards getting your first job.”

Jan McMahon, programme executive at Developing the Young Workforce – West Region, added: “We were delighted that the team from Taylor Wimpey West Scotland was able to facilitate this opportunity for students from both Barrhead and St Luke’s High Schools to learn more about the various roles and career opportunities that exist in the housebuilding industry.

“Our visit to the working construction site, sales office and the showhomes created very informative sessions that the students found engaging and interesting.

“The visit was a great opportunity for our students to consider how the world of work really operates, and it has played a key role in bringing real colour to the delivery of our ‘Developing the Young Workforce’ strategy that’s so important to future-proof the successful transition of our students into the next phase of their personal development. I’d like to thank the team from Taylor Wimpey West Scotland for their input in making this such a positive experience for everyone involved.”
