The JR Group scores landmark Albion project on behalf of Wheatley

The JR Group has started work on a significant new residential development in the Ibrox area of Glasgow, created in collaboration with Graeme Nicholls Architects and delivered in partnership with Wheatley Group.

The project will bring 160 new homes to a prominent brownfield site on Edmiston Drive that was formerly used as a matchday car park for Rangers Football Club and will include a collection of one, two and three-bedroom homes as well as a number of wheelchair accessible apartments.

Eighty of the new homes will become essential social housing for Wheatley and the remaining 80 will be mid-market rent for Lowther, also part of Wheatley.

The development, known as Albion, has been carefully designed to respect and celebrate the rich history of the surrounding neighbourhood. The land has served a variety of purposes over many decades, including the former Albion Greyhound Stadium and later a training ground for Rangers Football Club.

The new building will reflect the traditional tenement form that defines much of the local area, with two U-shaped blocks which feature ordered brick bay detailing and elegant arched windows. It also mirrors the iconic Ibrox Stadium which stands next to the development.

The scheme incorporates subtle references to the site’s sporting heritage, inspired in part by the distinctive bowl shape of the old greyhound track. A refined monochromatic red colour palette also offers a contemporary link to the iconic Ibrox Main Stand.

A series of community benefits within the local area will also be delivered by The JR Group team throughout the project.

Gary McGregor, managing director of The JR Group, said: “Albion represents a significant opportunity to reinvigorate a well-known site at the heart of Ibrox and continues our strong partnership with Wheatley Group, for whom we recently completed another successful project.

“The community surrounding this development is one we know extremely well, it’s where The JR Group was founded 30 years ago. Working closely with our partners and the design team, we have developed a scheme that respects the area’s heritage while delivering high-quality homes for the future. This location means a great deal to the city, and we are proud to help shape its next chapter.

“We look forward to progressing the development over the coming months as construction moves forward.”

Lindsay Lauder, director of development and regeneration at Wheatley Group, said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with the JR Group and Graeme Nicholls Architects to bring 160 much-needed affordable homes to the southside of Glasgow.

“There is a high demand for affordable housing across the city, and these high-quality, energy-efficient properties will go a long way to meeting that need, deliver homes for both social and mid-market rent.

“However, our investment is about far more than just bricks and mortar – it is about creating better homes, better lives and thriving communities for our tenants today and for generations to come.”

Graeme Nicholls, director of Graeme Nicholls Architects, said: “Our aim with our Albion project was to create a place that feels connected to the Ibrox neighbourhood.

“We studied the character of the area and the history of the site, drawing inspiration from the curved form of the former greyhound track that once stood there, as well as the arched windows and the lightly articulated rhythm of red brick that references both the traditional tenements found nearby and the iconic Main Stand of Ibrox Stadium itself. We are excited to see this significant project start on site.”

All JR Group divisions including Scaffolding, Construction, Specialist Services, DC Timber and Sprinkler Scotland, will be supporting the project and will be working alongside partners; Graeme Nicholls Architects, Indev Consult Engineers, Brown and Wallace, NBM, Carbon Futures, Mason Evans and MBLA Design Limited.
