Third phase completed at ‘truly transformational’ Dunbeg development

Third phase completed at 'truly transformational' Dunbeg development

The latest phase of a transformational development has seen 300 affordable, energy-efficient homes built near Oban.

These homes add to the 75 already built as part of Link’s innovative Dunbeg Development Corridor Masterplan to deliver 800 new homes and a mixed-use commercial zone.

Phase 3 of Dunbeg, which was funded by Link Group in partnership with the Scottish Government and Argyll & Bute Council, is the latest milestone of a major housing development consisting of 260 homes for general needs affordable rent and a further 40 for New Supply Shared Equity (NSSE) and mid-market rent.

A fly-through video of the development

Deputy First Minister Shona Robison saw the quality of accommodation for herself when she met residents during a visit to Argyll before a Travelling Cabinet meeting in Inveraray earlier this month.

She said: “We fully understand housing challenges in this part of the country. The new homes I visited make it easier for people to stay in Argyll & Bute, and for others to move here for work or other reasons. It was clear from speaking to residents that this development has been widely welcomed.

“It’s also important that the majority of these new homes are for social rent and come equipped with heat pumps that will lower the cost of energy for individuals and families.

“The Scottish Government is visiting Argyll & Bute to set out for local people our ambitious plans to boost growth, reduce poverty and build a more equal and fair society. We want to help the region to thrive, and delivering good-quality, affordable housing is a crucial part of that work.”

Colin Culross, managing director of C~urb, and Brett Sadler, West Highland Housing Association chief executive, welcome invited guests to Dunbeg

Colin Culross, managing director of C~urb, said: “I’m delighted the latest phase of this ultramodern and stunning development is nearing completion.

“It is an excellent example of partnership working at its best, with both funding and strategic support from the Scottish Government, Argyll & Bute Council and Scottish Water, along with Architecture Design Scotland, who helped us shape the design language for such a significant settlement.

“We believe this is a truly transformational development, which was essential to help reverse the depopulation of the Oban area, fuelled by a lack of housing opportunities and choices of tenure.

“Delivering 10% of the homes to exemplar accessibility and space standards across the tenure types, has also helped reduce the barriers people with disabilities have faced in accessing suitable homes.

Colin Culross updates Deputy First Minister Shona Robison about the Dunbeg development

“Phase 3 now offers a range of homes providing a variety of tenures including social and mid-market rent, and shared equity.

“This will be complemented by our next phase, which will bring homes for elderly people, student accommodation and market sale, alongside further mid market and social rent homes.”

Brett Sadler, West Highland Housing Association chief executive, said: “The West Highlands is a beautiful place to live, work, and visit. However, like any rural area, it needs investment to allow the local population to thrive in this picturesque part of Scotland.

“Dunbeg will play a massive role in transforming the lives of local people through giving them much needed modern, affordable homes in a setting second to none.”
