Construction industry pioneer Tom Renwick, who played a key role in the introduction of powered access equipment in the UK construction sector, has passed away at the age of 87.

Mr Renwick began a long career in construction in the early 1950s and worked on the Ravenscraig steelworks during his mechanical engineering draughtsman apprenticeship.

He moved into plant hire, holding roles at Reekie Plant and J. Bowen & Sons in Glasgow in the 1960s and Rowan & Boden Plant Hire in Renfrew in the early 1970s.

Later, he joined Motherwell Bridge Plant Ltd, where he progressed from plant hire manager to director, then managing director.

A years-long sojourn from the world of plant hire saw him take over a local pub in his home village of Lesmahagow, The Craignethan, which he ran with his wife, Betty, and their two children, Alan and Beth, from 1986 to 1991.

He ultimately returned to plant as managing director of William Laird Ltd, Scottish distributors of Genie and Niftylift powered access platforms, until his retirement in 2002.

Grand-daughter Jenna Blair told Scottish Construction Now: “He worked in the construction industry for a large part of his life, and was a true pioneer in the introduction of powered access equipment to the UK.

“He was an avid reader of the Scottish Construction Now news, part of his daily morning routine right up until very recently.”

She added: “He led a fascinating and varied life, travelling the world to plant conventions in America – Chicago and Seattle, primarily – Iceland, and Germany to name but a few places.

“He also played an instrumental part at the inception of the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), with some of the first JLG machines in the UK being inspected as arranged by John Grove, and spring self closers being added to the basket on these boom machines.”

Mr Renwick passed away on 25 May 2025, one month shy of his 88th birthday.

“Tom was a true family man, and will be sorely missed by all who knew him,” Ms Blair said.

A service is being held at South Lanarkshire Crematorium on Friday 13 June 2025 at 1pm.
