Wills Bros brings advanced survey technology to A9

Wills Bros Civil Engineering has invested in a full suite of advanced survey technology to support its work as the main contractor on the large-scale A9 dualling project in Scotland.

One of the most critical infrastructure projects in the UK, the A9 dualling project aims to improve road safety, reduce accidents, and enhance connectivity across Scotland by upgrading 83 miles of road from single to dual carriageway.

The £3.97 billion project will transform the A9 in 10 sections, with completion expected by 2035. To maximise precision, efficiency, and safety, Wills Bros has invested in a comprehensive suite of Trimble® equipment from SITECH UK & Ireland as it begins work on the Tay Crossing to Ballinluig section in Perth & Kinross.



SITECH worked with Wills Bros to provide 26 new pieces of equipment to support the £257 million infrastructure upgrade of 5.1 miles of dual carriageway.

The order included:

  • Seven SPS930 Total Stations with machine control option 
  • Five R780 GNSS rovers 
  • Two R750 GNSS base stations with TDL450 repeaters 
  • Twelve newly released TSC510 controllers with Siteworks software 

Liam Payne, technical sales consultant at SITECH UK & Ireland, said: “The combination of Trimble products we supplied provides a fully integrated, high-accuracy site positioning and machine control solution. This will improve productivity, reduce costly rework, and enable multiple crews to work efficiently across this large, long-term project.

All equipment is backed by an additional three-year warranty, and SITECH provides on-site technical support to ensure smooth operation – essential on projects of this size.”

SITECH and Wills Bros have a long-standing partnership on multiple major infrastructure projects, with Trimble technology complementing SITECH’s expertise to deliver high-accuracy, high-productivity workflows from field to office.

Pawel Szumski, engineering manager UK at Wills Bros, said: “Upgrading the Tay Crossing to Ballinluig section of the A9 includes a new overbridge at Guay South, new junctions, and a new structure over Kindallachan Burn. Our goal is to deliver best-in-class earthworks and civil infrastructure work. By working with SITECH and utilising Trimble technology, we have been able to achieve this from the very start.”

The new dual carriageway is estimated to be fully operational by the end of 2028 and is expected to improve road safety, reduce journey times, and support businesses, communities, and tourism by improving access to the Scottish Highlands.
