The project will see a full platform renewal, reducing the size from 194 metres to 150 metres. This will enable more efficient boarding and help improve overall train punctuality. Tactile paving will also be installed to support visually impaired passengers.  

Work begins on Saturday 18 October and is expected to last nine weeks. The platform will be carefully deconstructed and rebuilt in short sections, allowing the areas not under construction to remain open to passengers throughout the work. 

Ian Clark, scheme project manager at Network Rail Scotland, said: “Currently, trains stop in areas that often require people to walk along the platform to board, which slows down the process. This upgrade will create a more efficient layout, allowing quicker and safer boarding as soon as the train arrives and helping to minimise delays further along the route. 

“We really appreciate the patience of passengers and the local community while we carry out these improvements. It’s a vital investment in the future of Ardgay station and will ensure it remains safe, reliable and fit for purpose for years to come.” 

During the work, trains may only open one set of carriage doors, and passengers could be asked to board or disembark at different points along the platform than usual. Train staff will be on hand to assist, with station signage also in place to guide passengers.

“While we appreciate that our customers will experience changes at the station while the work takes place, the long-term improvements to train access and new tactile paving will make a real difference to the daily lives of many people, enabling easier, safer, and more comfortable journeys.” 

The work at Ardgay is part of Network Rail’s ongoing commitment to modernising Scotland’s railway infrastructure, with other platform renewal projects recently completing at Hillington West, Hamilton West, Dunkeld and Birnam, and Alexandra Parade in Glasgow.
