Bill Lawson, founder of Hebrides People, was guest of honour for the ceremony. At 88, Bill continues to take a keen and active interest in the organisation and has given his full backing to the community-led redevelopment.

Directors of Northton Heritage Trust gathered on site to celebrate this milestone, signalling the start of a transformational project that will deliver an enhanced visitor centre and new opportunities for learning, research and community use.

Lewis Builders has been appointed as main contractor, working alongside an island-based design team led by Tighean Innse Gall. Architectural design is provided by Studio Hebrides, with exhibition design by Bright. The redevelopment represents a significant investment in Harris, supporting local employment throughout the construction phase and creating long-term economic and cultural benefits for the islands.

Once complete, the new Hebrides People Visitor Centre will offer expanded exhibition spaces, modern research facilities and improved amenities capable of welcoming visitors from around the world. The Outer Hebrides’ unique heritage sits at the heart of the project. The Hebrides People archive — an irreplaceable resource combining Gaelic oral tradition with written records — will be safeguarded and made more accessible for future generations.

This development has been made possible thanks to support from the Islands Growth Deal, the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, The National Lottery Heritage Fund (made possible by National Lottery players), and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Northton Heritage Trust, a community benefit society, previously ran a successful community share offer, demonstrating strong local support and enabling the development of plans that have brought the project to this stage.
