Global professional services consultancy WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has been appointed by the University of Glasgow to work on a new state-of-the-art Learning and Teaching Hub on its Gilmorehill Campus in the West End.

The project, expected to commence in 2017, is part of a £1 billion development on what has been called an “inspirational and world-leading masterplan” for the University’s Gilmorehill campus.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff was also awarded a contract to develop the University’s Research Hub on the adjacent 14 acres Western Campus Site in January this year. The 13,400 sq.m Learning and Teaching hub will unite staff and students from a broad range of disciplines.

Global architecture firm, HLM is the lead consultant on the project. The multidiscipline engineering contract is being led byWSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s John Cox – building structures lead in Scotland and Graeme Bruce who heads up the building services business in Scotland. Services include building structures, civil and fire engineering, acoustics, ecology, security and sustainability.

John Cox said: “Being successful in the bid to deliver multidisciplinary services to two major, world class projects for the University of Glasgow is phenomenal. It’s a major win for our business and reflects our growth and capabilities within the industry.

“Partnering with HLM Architects will allow us to bring the most recent innovative expertise in world class teaching, learning and research facilities to the project.”

Patrick Clark, HLM associate director, added: “As part of the University’s commitment to being a world-class, world-changing university, we are delighted to have been appointed to develop the proposals for the Learning and Teaching Hub.

“This student focused building will support a motivated, vibrant and diverse community of learners and teachers to evolve innovative and effective approaches to study and pedagogy.

“The Learning and Teaching Hub will also be pivotal in the connectivity between the existing Gilmorehill campus, the western expansion and the wider West End.”

The University of Glasgow relocated to Gilmorehill in 1870 from its original base close to the cathedral on the city’s historic high street. Iconic campus structures include the towering George Gilbert Scott-designed main building and William Whitfield’s 1968 university library.
