The 16-year-old has just started work as an apprentice civil engineer based in the Bellshill headquarters of the company.

Caiden is one of several apprentices to join Advance Construction Scotland this year and will undertake a four-year training programme with the firm, which is working on a development of around 85 new houses in conjunction with Miller Homes on the grounds of the former St Michael’s Primary School in Dumbarton.

He said: “I was jumping with joy when I heard they were taking me on. I have always been interested in construction and used to help my Pappa who worked as a roofer.

“I didn’t want to go into full-time education from school, I wanted to be hands on and start work right away and this apprenticeship was an amazing opportunity.”

Caiden, who is currently learning about 3D CAD design, will go on to study for an HNC in Civil Engineering at Glasgow Kelvin College on day release.

He added: “I am so lucky to be able to learn while earning money, I haven’t been able to stop smiling since I got the apprenticeship.

“At first I was a bit worried about being the youngest in the office but everyone has been so welcoming and friendly, I am just so grateful to them for the opportunity.”

The ambitious teenager hopes to go on eventually to run a division of the company and believes there has never been a better time to work in construction.

Lynsey Breen, head of acquisitions for AC Land Regeneration, said: “We are delighted to welcome Caiden to the company, he is a breath of fresh air and full of ideas and enthusiasm. Apprenticeships are a great way to get a foot on the career ladder and many of our trainees have gone on to senior roles within the business.”
