Ceiling collapses at East Ayrshire primary school

East Ayrshire CouncilA primary school in East Ayrshire was forced to close after part of a classroom collapsed into a classroom last week.

The rubble was discovered at Hurlford Primary School on Friday morning, with the head teacher believing the damage to have been sustained overnight.

East Ayrshire Council said a contractor was called in on Friday to carry out further investigations which revealed five other classrooms may be “susceptible to similar issues”.

Pupils have been temporarily decanted to Loudoun Academy but a statement released by the local authority yesterday suggested that the disruption could go on until next June.

A council statement read: “In response to concerns raised by parents over the weekend we have endeavoured to keep the entire school together and not split classes across different establishments.

“Please be assured that the building is not dangerous; these are precautionary measures to ensure there is no further disruption to education provision.

“The likelihood is that these decant arrangements will be in place until June 2017. This will provide continuity and a settled teaching environment for the children.”

The school is subject to a £2.5million refurbishment and improvement project, with work beginning in April.
