The art deco building was anticipated to be upgraded as part of the beach masterplan but in 2025  it was revealed that the work “might never happen”, The Press and Journal (Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire) reports. 

But the new plans suggest the council is eyeing the building’s future. The council has unveiled a £1.4 million plan for a revamp at the historic ballroom. 

After building consultants carried out inspections, the council is now intending to hand out a seven-figure commitment to enhance sections of the building.

The plans consist of works to the iconic dome roof, alongside window replacements. 

Owned by Aberdeen City Council, the building has served as a venue to gigs from acts such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd and The Who.

It was supposed to have a major refurbishment, which forms part of the multi-million-pound beach masterplan.

The initial phase of this work is approaching completion, with work on the events arena across from the ballroom and a new playpark nearly completed. 

Design images outlined a vision for the building, showing roof extensions and a pedestrianised plaza out front, as well as a new replacement for the Beach Leisure Centre, which is next door.

However in 2025, the subsequent stages of the beach plan experienced setbacks, with planning vice-convener Martin Greig suggesting these works “might never happen”.

Concerns have formerly been conveyed that the hall could be left to rot if no progress is made.

But the new papers show officers are hoping to allocate £1.39m to enhance some sections of the venue.

One of the biggest alterations may be to the ballroom’s roof, which needs a rebuild of its dome along with the replacement of sections of tiles.

A “full replacement” of the windows in the Star Ballroom might also take place. 

Disability access would be enhanced, with wheelchair lifts being introduced to provide access to the upper levels of the building. 

In the approaching winter officers expect to appoint a contractor, with the works being delivered a year later between late next year and early 2028.

On 5 August, councillors will vote on the plan.
