And finally… Aggreko urges construction sector to review site power amid heatwave
The construction sector has been advised by the energy firm Aggreko to examine on-site power strategies in a bid to maintain resilience during heatwaves, and mitigate the impact of the weather on project delivery.
The announcement from the firm follows the National Energy System Operator (NESO) issuing a warning that power supply could be squeezed as temperatures across the UK continue to rise.
The notice was later retracted after emergency supplies were attained from the EU, but Aggreko said that similar conditions will place more pressure on the grid and could lead to additional notices.
An increase in temperatures are part of a wider issue mentioned in Building in Resilience, an Aggreko report which found that more than seven in ten British construction professionals have seen significant hold-ups amid volatile weather.
The energy firm is encouraging the construction sector to look into wider approaches of generating power in sites.
Tom Adlington, sector sales manager for building services and construction at Aggreko, said: “We’ve seen how soaring fuel prices have impacted the operational budgets of construction sites in recent months.
“This level of heat adds another layer of complexity by increasing the potential for reliance on back-up power strategies, which are often diesel-led.
“Integrating [battery energy storage systems] BESS into the on-site energy mix can reduce dependence on diesel, gain greater control over energy spend and avoid downtime due to high temperatures.”
Adlington added: “Using them alongside Stage V generators running on hydrotreated vegetable oil also offers a route to energy-efficient emission reduction, helping the sector in its decarbonisation efforts in the process.”
