And finally... nailing it

Cara MacDougall

A teenager from Alloa has made history after becoming the first female apprentice joiner at Persimmon Homes in Scotland.

Cara MacDougall (16), a former pupil of Alloa Academy, has joined Persimmon Homes Scotland after leaving school this summer to pursue a career in construction.

Cara enrolled in a pre-apprenticeship joinery course at Forth Valley College to develop her skills and is now combining her studies with on-site experience as part of her apprenticeship.

She will split her time between college and Persimmon developments, including the company’s Willowfields site in Sauchie, where new homes are currently being built for the local community.

To help kickstart her career, Persimmon has equipped Cara with the essential tools and kit needed for the role, removing financial barriers and ensuring she can hit the ground running.

Cara said: “I always knew I wanted a practical job where I could learn hands-on, and joinery just felt like the right fit for me.

“Getting the chance to work on site while continuing my training at college is a great opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to learning as much as I can.”

William Smith, senior regional apprenticeship manager at Persimmon Homes, said: “Cara has shown real determination to pursue a career in joinery and we’re delighted to welcome her into the business.

“She is breaking new ground as our first female apprentice joiner in North Scotland, and we’re proud to support her as she begins her career in construction.”
