And finally… half-baked
Paul Hollywood’s bid to build a walled kitchen garden at his Kent farmhouse has been rejected by council planners, who branded the proposal “unsympathetic” to the Grade II-listed property.
The Great British Bake Off judge had hoped to demolish a 1980s conservatory to create a larger kitchen-diner suitable for filming, alongside other internal changes including a study, new sitting room, and timber-framed windows.
Hollywood’s plans also featured a brick-walled garden with fruit trees and raised beds, intended for growing produce for his cookery shows. But Ashford Borough Council ruled the scheme would detract from the historic home’s character, saying such a wall was more fitting for a grander estate.
Local supporters argued he should be free to film at his own property, which he bought in 2019 for over £800,000. Parish councillors, however, questioned the scale of filming and its social benefit.
Hollywood has yet to comment on the decision.
